A Mississippi cop has been demoted from the K9 unit to patrol duty after abandoning his newly-retired furry partner at a shelter.
Ringo was recently celebrated after 9 years on the job. (He’s on the bottom left.)
Chicks on Right reports:
Well… it looks like shortly after that, he was ABANDONED AT AN ANIMAL SHELTER.
So much for “getting to enjoy civilian life.”
I mean, the cop shouldn’t necessarily be forced to keep a dog he can’t provide a loving home for… but wtf, dude? They were PARTNERS for 9 years, and he just dropped him off at a shelter? Like… the LEAST he could do is find him a loving home. I’m sure there are many people out there who would happily provide love and snacks and belly rubs to a good boy who did so much good for his community.
Ringo sniffed out drugs for the Jackson Police Department for nine years until the dog’s retirement this past October. Nevertheless, the Labrador retriever had to be rescued recently from the Webster Animal Shelter in nearby Madison, Miss., by the man who trained him to be a police dog, WLBT-TV reported Friday.
“I don’t know that there is a word for being both hurt and mad, but I was both of them. And I still am,” Randy Hare, owner of the Alpha Canine Training Center, told the station. “You know it’s just, you just don’t turn your back on something like that–that’s been with you for nine years.”
Randy was hurt and mad… but imagine how that pup felt. He has worked SO HARD for his handler… just to be discarded like garbage.
I don’t get it. I’ve had my dog for NINE MONTHS, and in that short amount of time, I’ve learned so much about unconditional love and loyalty. Dogs are truly God’s gift to us.
Jackson police officials said they didn’t know Ringo’s handler, Carl Ellis, had taken the canine to a shelter, the Clarion-Ledger reported.
“The Jackson Police Department respects and holds our canines with high regard just as we do any other officer within our department,” a police spokesman said, according to the paper. “They are family, and we do not feel they deserve anything less than a loving home in retirement.”
The department said Ellis had been reassigned to a patrol car.
You’re a real jerk, Carl.
I’m so glad Randy found him. I KNOW he’ll give Ringo a good home. Ringo deserves someone who values how hard he’s worked, and how loyal he’s been, as opposed to some selfish idiot who would discard him as soon as he’s not “useful” anymore.
