Joe Biden on Thursday blasted President Trump’s Iran policy as a “self-inflicted disaster” as tensions between the US and the Middle Eastern country continue to escalate.
The New York Post reports,
The 2020 Democratic candidate’s remarks come hours after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard shot down an American drone over the Strait of Hormuz — its commander warning that it is “prepared for war.”
“President Trump’s Iran strategy is a self-inflicted disaster,” Biden said in a statement.
“Two of America’s vital interests in the Middle East are preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and securing a stable energy supply through the Strait of Hormuz,” he said. “Trump is failing on both counts.”
Biden criticized Trump for promising that withdrawing from the Iran nuclear agreement and issuing sanctions would tame the country.
“But they’ve only gotten more aggressive,” he said.
“Trump also promised that walking away would somehow lead to a better deal – instead, the predictable has happened: Iran is building back up its nuclear capability. It’s sadly ironic that the State Department is now calling on Iran to abide by the very deal the Trump Administration abandoned.”
Biden added, “By walking away from diplomacy, Trump has made military conflict more likely. Another war in the Middle East is the last thing we need.”
