Fox News correspondent Geraldo Rivera got into it on Sean Hannity‘s show tonight defending Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) against claims of anti-Semitism from the host and Dan Bongino, accusing the two of “trying to diminish this woman.”
“Congresswoman Talib… I think has really been victimized in a way that is unmistakable,” Rivera began on the segment tonight — referencing the Republicans who have attacked the freshman lawmaker for comments she made about Palestine and the Holocaust.
“There’s a kind of a calming feeling, I always tell folks, when I think of the Holocaust and the tragedy of the Holocaust, and the fact that it was my ancestors — Palestinians — who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity, their existence, in many ways, had been wiped out,” Tlaib said on a Yahoo News podcast recently. “All of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post-the Holocaust, post-the tragedy and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time.”
Rivera insisted that “there’s no way you can read her remarks on the calming effect — as my dear colleague Dan Bongino has done — as being related to her feelings about the Holocaust.”
“It is an obscenity to try to make that argument,” he added. “She was not suggesting that you know, the killing of the Jews was something that calmed her. She was saying the fact that the Palestinians suffered so much and gave up so much but at least the Jews had a homeland to go to in the wake of the destruction committed by the Nazis.”
The Fox News correspondent reiterated that “she’s being taken out of context in a grotesque way that is extremely unfair” and specifically called out “Sean and Dan” by name to tell his fellow panelists thay have “taken a step too far.”
Bongino started his response by describing in detail how Jews were brutally killed under the Third Reich, to which Rivera shot back, “Don’t condescend to me about the Holocaust.” Bongino went on to claim that “some of the Palestinians aligned with the Nazis to further attack the Jews,” which quickly outraged Hannity’s other guest.
“To lay the Holocaust at the door of the Palestinians?!” Rivera exclaimed in shock. “To say that the Palestinians have some responsibility for the Holocaust is so historically inaccurate. It is another obscenity.”
The two finished the segment by debating the Israel-Palestine conflict, with Bongino falsely claiming that it is a “historical fact” that “there was never a Palestine” and Rivera trying to explain that “Palestinians lost their homeland” after the Holocaust so Jews could return to their historical homeland.
“This is cheap politics — you’re trying to diminish this woman,” Rivera concluded.
